Only with trust, faith, and support can the woman allow the birth experience to enlighten and empower her.-Claudia Lowe

In today's technological world it is easy to forget how to nurture a laboring woman through her incredible journey of self-discovery.   A journey ultimately leading to the birth of a baby and of a family.  Her partner, who is her supporter, lover and caregiver is placed in a difficult and stressful role as a labor support person.  Responsible for knowing the intricacies of birth, comfort measures, labor positions, pushing positions, while communicating with healthcare providers, and being a memory keeper.  A tough job for anyone not fully trained.  This is where hiring a doula, is useful.

 A Doula

...recognizes birth a a key life experience that the mother will remember all her life.

...understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.

...assists the woman and her partner in preparing and carrying out their plans for birth.

...stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor.

...provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, and objective viewpoint and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions.

...facilitates communication between the mom, her parner and clinical care providers.

...perceives her role as one who nurtures and protects the woman's memory of her birth experience.
